Do you take advice from the Internet? If so, I am sorry to tell you but you might have Made a DANGEROUS mistake!
I have come across many productivity Gurus giving their personal perspective as solid undeniable Advice. People make mistakes, Gurus are people, Gurus make mistakes… huh who what have thought that buying a 99$ course would be filled with basic information you could have found on the front page of google, OH and the “Top secrets” are ultra specific tips that may not apply to you, heck even make your problems worse.
“Internet Gurus”
Many have a fair share of past experience and have acquired knowledge on a certain topic, does that make anyone an expert? Even experts don’t know what they are talking about most of the time. Who should I trust? what part of the advice should I take? Where can I find the advice I need?
Humans have a unique experience during their lifetime. We figure out one way or another that we are incredibly different from each other and yet awfully similar and repetitive in certain ways. Have you heard the phrase: ” No one understands me” or “People don’t get it, they don’t know what I am going through”. We like to distance ourselves from possible solutions and ignorantly (and arrogantly) believe we are a unique case of misfortune, the only black sheep in the family, and blah blah yada yada.
Who Should you take advice from?
It would be hypocritical for me to give you advice under this topic. I will instead tell you about how I decide who to listen to and judge and decide if it’s useful. (Let me know in the comment section)
I just keep in mind 3 important things.
- WHO
- WHY
- HOW
Who is giving out advice?
Credibility comes from experience in a certain field and consistent messages/results. If the person in question is at a place in their life that I want to be in and has strong credibility…. I am Listening!
Most of the time the who matters more than the what. Obviously, we should try to be critical of any advice given by anyone. Never follow blindly to Aunt “Mary” advice (who you completely adore) on finance if she’s bankrupt herself. Listen to her first since you never know if she’s telling you how to avoid her past mistakes. Seek credible and expertise sources above all else.
Why are they giving me this advice?
Are there intentions behind what they are saying? Are they telling me this to get me to buy a course or product? I try to ask why people are being kind enough to give advice. Use your intuition and think twice if they recommend using money to buy a “quick fix”.
I have found that quick fixes break even quicker. What do you think? let me know below.
How is this advice working for them?
“Those who can’t, teach.” If they aren’t using their own advice don’t take it! They can have “credibility” and seemingly good intentions but if they don’t do what the are peaching…then burn it and throw it out the window. The famous phrase should go as follows “Those who DO, teach”.
